Houston Area Trail Runners volunteers with Memorial Park Conservancy to help maintain trails.
On Saturday March 15th the Houston Area Trail Runners were able to give back to the trails that we call home. Our normally meets our at the Ho Chi Minh Trails that are the south side of Memorial park and are the oasis decribed by most in the city. These are natural surface trails that allow all types of activities from biking, running and walking as well.
For the past few years most of the projects have been led by GHORBA( Greater Houston Off Road Biking Association) and the Houston Area Trail Runners have been ready to give back to the park and to the trails. The first steps in really helping have been behind closed doors as well. We have been able to attend forums, meeting and do our part in making sure the Master plan of the park includes the maintenance of these great trails that we get to run on.
We lead out yesterday with the first intentions of just to clean up the green trail that is mapped. It is very unfortunate that people think that the trails are somewhere to dump their trash, beer cans or empty gel wrappers along the way. We did find 2 items that were odd one of which was a small 2 foot Christmas tree with stand and also a half cut bowling ball as well. From reports the city at some point used this area as a trash fill so its not surprising that the trash can be interesting at times.
We are looking forward this year to working along side the MPC (memorial park conservancy), The City of Houston Park Department and GHORBA to maintain and improve the trails that we call home.
