ABOUT HATR

Message from the President:

Welcome to the Houston Area Trail Runners (HATR) website!  We are happy you found us amongst the many different running clubs out there.  I think you will find us different.  You will find we are a source of encouragement and education to further your trail running endeavors and achieve your personal goals be they fitness or competition.  Our members have a wide range of experience from 5Ks to 100 mile finishes.  We run for fun which grows and improves our body and spirit.

I joined HATR in the spring of 2013.  My life changed when I arrived at dark o’clock in Memorial Park Southside Trails and saw Rob Goyen, then-President and Co-founder of HATR, come out of the darkness.  He was sweaty, smiling and had a headlamp on his head.  I followed him into the trails and discovered the passion I was looking for for so long.  Trail running combined my love of running and love of nature.  It awakened me and introduced me to some great new friends.

Rob handed over the presidency to me in the Spring of 2016.  Since then, I am making a point to continue growing the club to a bigger future.  I want our members to feel pride in HATR and claim us on their race registration.  I want to see constructive dialog on our social media outlets that promote our sport, our trails and our achievements.  Together with the club’s Board of Directors, we encourage you to become active in the weekly group runs, happy hours and volunteer events we plan.  I also want to stress that we are open to any idea you may have for a destination race, local event, or any idea for that matter that can make our club more exciting and fulfilling.

So, lace up those shoes and get ready for fun on the trails.  If you need anything, please contact me or the Board or any member as we are a family.  We are in this together, from the 5K to the 100 miles!

HATRs Up!

HATR History

The Houston Area Trail Runners (HATRs) were founded in 2012 in order to fill a burning need in the Houston Running Community.  While Houston has a vibrant and active road running scene, there was no group dedicated with a specific focus toward trail and ultra running.  As the sport of trail running began to boom early in the decade, more and more runners began making the transition from road to trail.  Thus the HATRs were formed to fill the void, and are the most active trail running club in Houston and surrounding areas.  The HATRs were born out of an idea of founder Robert Goyen, who wanted to give back to the trail running community.  He pulled the "founding four" together which included his wife Rachel, and friends Jeremy Hanson and Jose Quintanilla.  Through persistence they grew the club from a few people into a large group with weekly group runs, social events, and race trips.  While each has taken a less active role in the club going forward, they have laid the foundations for a very successful running club.

Fast forward to today, and the HATRs are a quickly growing and active club.  Our mission is to promote friendship and fellowship among runners and support the local trail running community.  We do this by hosting weekly group runs, club social events (such as happy hours), having large group turn-out at local races, and volunteering in the trail running community.  Look for more interesting group runs, events, trips and social gatherings as the club continues to grow!

The HATRs are a USATF Certified Club in the Gulf Region.  Our club number is 25-6109.

If you are interested in joining us, please see the Join HATR page to become an official member!  Of course you are welcome to join us on a group run and try us out for free!
